Overview of Loyd Park
The number one priority of establishing Joe Pool Lake, which accompanies Loyd Park, is to control the water distributing into the Trinity River along with the fishing and recreation use in the area. Loyd Park’s mission statement expresses enhancing the quality of life and creating community through people, programs, places and partnerships. The vision focuses on bringing people together to change lives. The mission statement also incorporates an opportunity of play, creative expression and stress-relief. October 1, 2001 marked the last day that the park was managed and operated under the Trinity River Authority (TRA) until the city of Grand Prairie took over the lease. Loyd Park is in fact named after the Loyd family who actually settled the land that is now currently Loyd Park many centuries ago. In the same place where the old Loyd House once stood before burning down is the current Loyd House, which is open for anyone to rent and stay in at any time.

Benefits/Opportunities
The other intern and I had a starting pay at $10.75. A few weeks into the internship the department performed an evaluation and changed the pay to $11.41 to fit the median distribution of internship pay in the state. If desired, interns are allowed to stay in R.V.'s at the park which can be provided to them at no expense. The internship provides vast opportunities such as networking with the other components of the department such as with the recreation facilities, the natatorium, golf courses, etc. Networking is a great value with a seasonal internship job at Loyd Park as you are able to meet the directors in charge of the department and make connections with them that could lead into a future job or career in the Grand Prairie Parks, Arts & Recreation department. Hours are very flexible and the job is educational when it comes to dealing with issues and learning how to properly communicate to customers.
Achievements
The internship has taught me how to plan and implement events and programs in the real world work environment. My supervisor, the other intern, and I spent many hours of our week planning and brainstorming all of the possible events and activities to have in the park and which would potentially be the most successful. A major achievement that I have taken from the internship at Loyd Park is being able to successfully execute an event on a large scale. Our Loyd Park Party, which is the biggest event of the summer at the park, had over 1,200 participants attend. The event included having an In N' Out food truck, inflatables, lawn games, & more! Also, the internship allowed me to meet the other staff in charge of the Lake Parks in the city, which is very beneficial networking wise and being able to understand how the chemistry works in the work environment.
